SER de Puerto Rico and robotic technology at the service of rehabilitation:

By: Yarimar Marrero RodríguezDid you know that in our three centers located in San Juan, Ponce and Ceiba we have innovative robotic technology equipment that is at the forefront of rehabilitation services internationally?

SER de Puerto Rico has been a pioneer in the Caribbean in offering rehabilitation services of the highest quality with first class equipment that is at the forefront of the world and a specialized and multidisciplinary staff committed to improving the quality of life of our participants from early intervention to Adulthood. The use of robotic technology is an invaluable support within traditional therapy that our professionals in the areas of physical, occupational and speech therapy use to enhance the recovery process of our participants. At the same time, they are interactive tools that shorten the recovery process while the child or adult patient acquires mobility, improves balance, strength and resistance, and also has fun. In our Organization we are committed to making our services accessible to the entire population.

Today we want you to know which are those teams that are within your reach:

  • Lokomat: It is a medical equipment aimed at the treatment of ambulation using robotic technology. This treatment helps the walking ability of participants with a disability related to brain or spinal cord injury; strokes, neurological and orthopedic conditions. Being like a kind of video game, the participant takes control of the therapy in an interactive and dynamic way.
  • Hunova: It is a piece of equipment that works on postural control and balance in a sitting and standing position. In addition, it is possible to work from prevention with an index that allows to identify the risk of falls in the elderly. It also has other applications for the rehabilitation of sports or orthopedic injuries such as ankle injuries, knee injuries, hip injuries or spinal injuries.
  • C-Mill: Works with the type of neurological diagnoses that affect physical function and particularly walking function. A treatment plan focused on improving or promoting this functional pattern is worked on.
  • Armeo: It is a robotic arm that also fits the participant's arm and assists in the movement of that upper extremity. It helps us improve the precision of the movement of that arm, the reach and the visuomotor coordination.
  • Multisensory Laboratory It is an interactive environment designed to stimulate the senses of touch, hearing, sight and smell. To carry out multisensory stimulation, various tools are used: lighting effects, objects with different textures, objects that create sounds, music, and aromatherapy. The multisensory laboratory will benefit children and adults with motor, learning, communication, social, behavioral and stereotyped difficulties.
  • The Rapael system that has three teams: Smart Pegboard is an interactive board with some games. Smart Glove and the Smart Board.
  • REAL: It is an immersion and virtual reality equipment. It is used through glasses that the participant puts on. This equipment is also available in our 3 centers and we use it as an instrument in traditional therapy to promote movement. This equipment works the whole body because it has sensors that adjust to the lower extremities, legs and arms.
