SER de Puerto Rico and the rehabilitation of the adult population

By: Yarimar Marrero Rodríguez

SER de Puerto Rico offers the highest quality medical and therapeutic services to children and adults through our three centers located in San Juan, Ponce and Ceiba. Over the years, people have associated our Organization with the service to infants, children, and young people, and we are proud to have achieved this space of visibility and contribution to children with functional diversity and disabilities on the Island. But SER also offers services of rehabilitation to the adult population and our professionals focus on goals that contribute to the daily function and physical function of those people who, in the same way, come to our Centers.

The diagnoses of adult participants who receive our services are very broad and often have

implications on physical function and mobility. We serve participants who have suffered cerebrovascular accidents or who have a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's, spinal cord injuries, as well as mobility problems acquired as a result of a traffic accident that caused head trauma and neurological damage as a consequence. At the same time, we serve older adults who need rehabilitation after orthopedic surgery, such as knee replacement or hip replacement, and present a lot of pain in those initial stages, which is why we have a Pain Management unit.

Our centers have a multidisciplinary team made up of physiatrists, physical, occupational and speech therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists and social workers who accompany the participant and their families in their rehabilitation process, which often begins with prevention. That is why we have a robotic technology team that helps us to objectively predict the percentage of risk of falls in the elderly in order to develop personalized treatment plans.

The multidisciplinary approach and the experience of our staff, as well as our robotic technology teams, make our Organization a benchmark for rehabilitation in the Caribbean. During its more than 70 years, SER de Puerto Rico has maintained its commitment because we believe that everyone has the right to receive the highest quality rehabilitation service, regardless of whether or not the person can afford these services, if they need them, We feel the responsibility of being able to help and support this family, either through scholarships or by identifying funds that can cover the expenses of this rehabilitation at any stage of their lives.
