Guillermo Atiles Moreau Specialized School in Civic Competences
«A look at each of the corners of our school and the faces of our community is to find hope for a new society that is more empathetic, inclusive, peaceful and transformative»
The education It's fundamental in he process from rehabilitation.
Since 1955, SER de PR has had an agreement with the Department of Education of Puerto Rico to administer the Escuela Ciudadana Lcdo. Guillermo Atiles Moreau. As part of the agreement, SER de PR is in charge of the physical plant, hires part of the teaching and non-teaching staff, contributes to technology and internet connections and the maintenance of green areas, among others.
The Citizen School is a pedagogical project of curricular change whose mission is to contribute to the transformation of Puerto Rico through the development of sensitive, empowered, reflective citizens and committed to the improvement of their local and global environment. It forms more participatory citizens, socially committed, and aware of citizen action, recognizing diversity as universal wealth and in solidarity with the principles of peace, equity and human rights for all. For these purposes, it is considered essential that each student has the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes that foster a sense of identity and belonging to a common humanity, based on the development of more inclusive, just, democratic, and peaceful communities.
Students benefit from the interaction between teachers and SER clinicians. Collaborative work, technical assistance, dialogue and information sharing contribute to a necessary framework for participation. As they work together, they build both knowledge and favorable interactions.
Our Educational Model
The model of the Escuela Ciudadana Lcdo. William atiles Moreau de SER de PR is framed in the need to provide students with disabilities and ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) the best educational opportunities within their abilities in a personalized approach. The Citizen School uses the collaborative teaching model (“Co-Teaching" either "team Teaching«) and reduced enrollment in heterogeneous groups (60% students with physical disabilities, 20% students with ASD diagnosis and 20% students without disabilities) that allow optimizing inclusion. The model is also eclectic, since each year it seeks to improve and/or combine educational practices that benefit the education of each student, it works with the active participation of the family, it evaluates and provides support according to the environment of child development beyond school.
Pre-K to Third Grade
The Montessori methodology is used, a strategy focused on the individual needs of children and the development of their independence. Each Montessori environment has a Montessori Guide (teacher) and a Special Education teacher in groups of 12 to 14 students. These staff are supported by educational assistants equally trained in managing the conditions they serve. The care ratio results in two children for every adult, which facilitates individual attention without causing co-dependency. The Montessori Guides adapt the materials and content for the students who require it.
C.Fourth Grade to Twelfth Grade
The regular curriculum of the Department of Education is used; but it is adapted to the needs and abilities of the students, whether or not they have a disability. All these groups have two teachers in each classroom – a regular teacher and a Special Education teacher – where both work collaboratively so that the students achieve the goals set and achieve the maximum of their psycho-academic and personal potential. There are no more than 12 students with various functional challenges, ASDs, and students without diagnoses in each classroom.
